WEISS LS280 - High Speed Linear Transfer System
Assembly applications generally involve multiple component parts and processes. Each of these individual parts and processes has its own unique characteristics, which in turn influence the overall machine cycle time. With traditional rotary type assembly systems, the machine cycle time, and therefore the output, is determined by the slowest operation. The WEISS LS280 – High Speed Linear Transfer System however, enables several assembly operations, with different processing times, to be performed within the same machine therefore reducing the overall cycle time and maximising the output.
Fast & flexible concept

As Europe’s leading manufacturer of indexing technology WEISS is committed to providing the highest quality engineering combined with the most innovative and practical solutions for both machine builders and end user customers. The WEISS LS280 with its simple design and modular construction allows the system to be easily tailored to suit individual customer and application requirements.

The system comprises of assembly modules which use indexing scrolls to transport work carriers through the system. The LS280 concept allows several work carriers to be indexed through the system at the same time, and with four different indexing pitches available – 70mm, 140mm, 280mm and 560mm, the system can accommodate different assembly or process times without compromising the overall machine cycle time and output.

For example, simple part transfer or assembly operations can be performed with the work carriers indexing through a single pick and place station on a 70mm pitch, working on one assembly at a time, and achieving a 2.0 second cycle. For more complex assembly operations or process operations, the work carriers can be indexed at a greater pitch through multi-tooled stations. These multi-tooled stations can be used to process perhaps 2 or 4 parts for each index, thus providing a greater time to perform the required operation, but still achieving the overall output of 2.0 seconds for each individual part. This flexibility allows the machine builder or end user to configure the system to provide the optimum process time for each individual operation and still maintain the maximum throughput from the system.

The LS280 is based upon an indexing drive system which is at the forefront for both speed and reliability, and is capable of achieving cycle rates previously unimaginable for systems of this type. Whilst conventional linear indexing systems are reaching their limits at 20 cycles per minute, having to stop, raise and lower work piece pallets, the LS280 is capable of up to 45 smooth indexing cycles per minute using its high precision scroll indexing system.

The modular design of the LS280 also allows each of the individual assembly cells to work autonomously with a buffer between one cell and the next ensuring optimum operation. In addition, the speed of the conveyor belts, which transport the work carriers between the scroll stations, is matched to the sine motion curve of the scroll to ensure smooth and jerk free operation at all times.
Another benefit from the design of the LS280 is the fact that during the operation of the system there is no electrostatic charge generated. This means that the system can be used for applications where ESD capability is a requirement. Further flexibility can be obtained by including automatic and manual stations within the same system, making the LS280 adaptable to a multitude of potential assembly and processing applications.

Maintenance free with high reliability

The design of the LS280 enables maintenance free three shift operation, due to a combination of hardened and ground bearing tracks and a fully integrated central lubrication system. WEISS manufacture a complete range of rotary and linear indexing systems, plus fully programmable pick and place units, which can be applied to a wide range of automation applications. The precision, quality and reliability of the product range has earned WEISS the reputation as first choice for indexing solutions throughout Europe and the United Kingdom.
