With its new Precision Hole Technology concept, ESAB Cutting Systems has extended the capabilities of its CNC plasma cutting machines through the integration of plasma cutting, software and control systems to improve hole cutting cylindricity and to deliver the highest possible cut edge quality.
This technology is available on new ESAB plasma cutting machines equipped with an m3 plasma system and new Columbus.NET nesting and cutting programming software. It is also built into the new Vision T5 CNC controller and gives users the ability to produce the highest quality plasma cut bolt-ready holes in mild steel up to 2.5cm thick and holes down to 1:1 diameter to thickness ratio.

Precision Hole Technology integrates the plasma system, the CNC control, the programming software, height control and the cutting machine. All the parameters that affect hole quality are automated and carefully controlled, including the lead-in and lead-out, height control, speed, acceleration, kerf offset, and plasma gases. No special operator intervention is required.

The Precision Hole Technology concept takes advantage of the advanced gas control capabilities available in ESAB’s m3 plasma systems. This is integrated with Columbus.NET nesting and cutting programming software and a new process control database, built into the VISION T5 CNC control system, with additional data required for small hole cutting. The VISION T5 automatically optimises the cutting and nesting of small holes created with its optional EasyShape Part Program Generator, or with imported in DWG or DXF files.

An important element of Precision Hole Technology is the automatic height control system that sets and maintains the optimum torch height during hole cutting. An encoder accurately measures the torch height as it retracts from the plate. The CNC controller uses this distance information to maintain the proper height while cutting a small hole, without relying on arc voltage. This eliminates the effects of arc voltage delay and electrode wear which affect the shape of the hole.

Precision Hole Technology is available on new Combirex DX, Suprarex and Eagle machines and there is the possibility of retrofitting it to many existing ESAB plasma installations.
