Simulation Provides Net Benefit: Industry Survey Results

Based on our recent survey of the industry, it has been confirmed that sheet metal forming simulation technology provides significant benefits to those who have taken up the technology.
61% of respondents agreed that “Sheet metal forming simulation technology is cost effective and always results in a net benefit at the end of a tooling project” while the remainder were yet to experience the technology for themselves. 67% of those surveyed either wanted to use the technology more or did not have time to use it for themselves regularly. With regards to delivery of the technology, 59% thought it was best to experience the benefits of the technology first, by using a service such as SimulateLite or SimulateComplete prior to deciding whether a purchase was justified. 76% of respondents are using both 2D + 3D CAD systems. This is not surprising seeing that a simulation always begins by uploading a CAD file.

Perhaps one of the barriers to more companies using simulation is the fact that 48% say they must first convince their superior, before investing in software or out sourced services. StampingSimulation is able to assist with this scenario by providing a sample simulation OR by downloading the no cost software EasyBlank to demonstrate to superiors the benefits without initial outlay.

When asked what the greatest challenge in the sheet metal stamping industry was, common responses were:

Blank size calculation
Predicting splits
Tooling cost and timing
Designing a successful process
Springback

This response fits with the 48% who either regularly use OR are planning to use simulation in the near future to solve these types of problems.
