David Curtis, Chairman of MacDermid Autotype’s Health, Safety and Environmental Protection Policy Group, explained that to win the Award, “We had build still further on what we’d achieved in previous years. Safety issues are constantly changing, as the needs of our business and customers around the world evolve, so we’ve had both to implement new procedures and strengthen existing measures”.
These measures have included a comprehensive policy statement and safety plan covering all site activities, safety responsibilities that are recognised at Board level, clear verification that staff are competent in specific procedures, and detailed risk assessments and safety training plans. In addition, all management systems have been comprehensively audited by the BSI and site activities have been accredited by authorised risk insurance auditors.
MacDermid Autotype’s President, Peter Levinsohn, commented, “This is a fantastic achievement and a reflection on the professionalism and commitment of all our staff to make MacDermid Autotype in Wantage one of the safest and most dynamic workplaces anywhere in Europe. The fact that we have cut our accident incident rate again, from a position where it was 20% better than the industry norm in 2006, to 50% better in 2007, is a real achievement in itself. Just as importantly, the BSC award is about far more than just meeting statistical targets, as it recognises the fact that our entire business is structured to allow us to continuously maintain and improve our attitudes and performance on safety and health protection; this benefits our employees and customers around the world.”
