Five engineers campaign to attract young people to engineering
Chosen by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), one of the University of Huddersfield’s most celebrated engineers is to be one of five engineering advocates that will promote the Government’s campaign entitled the Year of Engineering. Dame Xianqgian Jiang is a Professor of Precision Metrology at the University of Huddersfield’s Centre for Precision Technologies.
In 2017, she was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list and was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to Engineering and Manufacturing.
She was awarded the Renishaw/Royal Academy Chair in Precision Metrology in 2016 and, in 2017, became the Director of the £40 million Future Metrology Hub, one of only eight EPSRC-funded Future Manufacturing Research Hubs in the UK.
The Research Hub’s mission is to develop new technologies and universal methods that will integrate measurement science with design and production processes, to aid the development of digital, high-value manufacturing.
Now, Professor Jiang’s amazing career will be used by the EPSRC as an inspiration to attract youngsters to consider a career in engineering.
The year-long campaign by the Government aims to tackle the engineering skills gap and widen the pool of young people who join the profession.
The campaign, which is supported by the UK Space Agency, is to fund a series of education and outreach projects designed to inspire interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The Year of Engineering launched last month.
