Explosive performance in Oz from Chemineer’s Greerco Colloid Mill
Close to Borroloola in Australia’s Northern Territory, in an area with some of the world’s largest mineral ore bodies, a Greerco Colloid Mill from Chemineer is helping a mining company produce high quality explosives for its zinc and lead extraction work.
Requiring controlled explosions in this part of the tropical savannas region, the mining operator introduced the Colloid Mill in order to bring about more consistency when mixing ammonium nitrate and associated chemical compounds on site.

A highly efficient homogenising unit that rapidly and uniformly disperse solids and/or liquids, the Greerco Colloid Mill allows the mining company to modify settings during preparation for optimum process results. Prior to entering the Colloid Mill, a Kenics Static Mixer from Chemineer is used to maximize mixing efficiency without the wasted energy and material blockage typically found in more restrictive motionless mixers.
Capable of producing stable emulsions to the sub-micron range by repeatedly reproducing unvarying particle-size accuracy and distribution for any emulsion or suspension, the Greerco Colloid Mill has several design benefits that eliminate the need for costly add-ons.

Suitable for a wide variety of manufacturing applications, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food, the Colloid Mill is available as a horizontal unit for continuous in-line processing, or as a mobile vertical mixer, with hopper for batch production. Chemineer can also design and custom-build one-off hopper units to meet precise process requirements.

The highly versatile Greerco Colloid Mill can be provided in a full range of sizes, from small R&D, to large-scale batch operations. Supplied (optional) as Cleaned in Place (CIP) or Sterilised in Place (SIP) for sensitive applications, this comprehensive Chemineer range is fitted with two options of Rotor/Stator combinations. The standard Rotor Stator is ideal for most emulsions and dispersions, while the special grooved Rotor/Stator is designed for viscous emulsions. This unit reduces the dispersed phase droplets to an extremely small size - usually 2 microns or less, with many droplets in the sub micron range.
