Customers can rely on Spelsberg for fast turnaround on customised enclosures

As the leading supplier of non-metallic electrical enclosures, Spelsberg offers a standard range that covers some 4,000 variants and associated accessories. But even with such a large range, there are always enquiries that can’t be easily met with a standard product, and where a completely bespoke solution is often the best option.

This is exactly the option that Spelsberg offered when approached by the customer, a global manufacturer of power and automation systems. The company wanted enclosures which would match the colour of its pump product, supplied with three M16 cable entries and a customised mounting plate. Order numbers would typically be 1,000+, and the enclosures needed to be supplied assembled, with a fast turnaround time.

With full product moulding, manufacturing and customisation facilities at its premises in Germany, Spelsberg is readily able to meet such demands, delivering high quality customised enclosure solutions on extremely quick lead times.

The facility boasts in-house CNC machines for custom parts and bespoke entry point configuration. Where completely bespoke enclosures are required, designed from the ground up, Spelsberg’s unique tooling service eliminates the usual customisation costs of customer-specific tooling. This makes even highly bespoke enclosures cost-effective.

A laser marking service is also available, enabling custom marking of company logos, certification and instructions.

Working closely with the customer to determine how the enclosure requirements could best be fulfilled, Spelsberg engineers recommended custom moulded enclosures from the TK range, fitted out with a customised mounting plate, pre-drilled for the cable glands, and then supplied with the mounting plate and cable glands pre-assembled into the enclosure. To match the enclosure itself, cable glands would be supplied in the same colour.

Where bespoke designs are required in large quantities, and where there are likely to be repeat orders, it is often more economical to produce a bespoke mould, as was the case here. Creating the custom enclosure started with a consultation between the customer’s design team and Spelsberg engineers to produce a 3D CAD model of the enclosure. Once approved, the tooling was created.

Custom enclosure moulding is viable thanks to a tooling service that uses the unique, interchangeable sidewall components of the moulding tool, making it easy to create the customer-specific tooling. Using this process, Spelsberg was readily able to modify TK enclosures to meet the application’s requirements.

The TK enclosure range comprises high-strength polycarbonate and polystyrene boxes offering IP66 environmental protection for use in even the most demanding applications. A favourite among electrical installers and OEMs, they provide a rugged, non-corrosive housing for sensitive electronics.

Importantly for the customer, Spelsberg was able to offer a turnaround time of just four weeks for fully assembled enclosures in quantities of 1000+. By supplying the enclosures fully assembled, Spelsberg was able to greatly reduce on-site installation times and costs for the customer. Further, to service repeat orders, Spelsberg keeps the tooling at its facilities in Germany, ensuring that it is ready for production any time additional enclosures are required for the pump motor range.
