BOURBON, which operates a global fleet of over 500 offshore support vessels for the oil and gas industry, has a policy to use laser position reference sensors as a key part of its programme to ensure the safety of operations and enhance the reliability of vessels. After a successful trial of a Fanbeam 5 system on one of BOURBON's Liberty series vessels in West Africa, the decision was taken to proceed with Renishaw as the sole supplier for both existing vessel DP upgrades and new-build vessels entering its fleet over the term of the agreement.

Commenting on this, John Howells, UK/ROW Sales Manager (Marine) for Renishaw's Spatial Measurement Division, said: “It signifies an important step in Renishaw's growth into the offshore marine industry. While Fanbeam 5's technical performance, reliability and cost effectiveness are critical to its success in the market, this agreement also recognises Renishaw's investment in its global service network and the security that comes from dealing with a FTSE 250 organisation.”

Renishaw supplies laser measurement and surveying technologies for use in extreme environments, including laser DP position reference systems for the offshore marine industry. Fanbeam pioneered laser-based DP technology 20 years ago, and today Fanbeam 5 is the world's most widely used laser DP position reference system.
