BIS select committee sees innovation in action with Rolls-Royce apprentices

The visit to Rolls-Royce provided an overview of the operations carried out in Derby. Mr Calder was also shown around Rolls-Royce’s Learning and Development centre and the Apprentice Academy where he found out more about the various apprenticeship programmes offered by Rolls-Royce which supports and helps to maintain the highly skilled workforce.

Gary Calder is the Senior Select Committee Media Officer for several Select Committees, including the Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) Select Committee, and he has embarked upon a Fellowship to develop a greater awareness of how businesses operate and how Government policies impact on business and industry.

Rolls-Royce’s Government Relations Officer was also onsite and was interested to learn more about Mr Calder’s experience working in Parliament and specifically on the BIS Select Committee, looking to understand how the work of a Select Committee can ultimately affect businesses like Rolls-Royce.

Commenting on his visit, Mr Calder said:

“It was fascinating to find out about how Rolls Royce operate, the business challenges they face, and how policy decisions impact on their business. The visit provided a valuable insight into high productivity manufacturing, the Rolls Royce apprenticeship programmes, and the work which RR undertake to boost the capacity of their supply chain businesses.”
