Chosen by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), one of the University of Huddersfield’s most celebrated engineers is to be one of five engineering advocates that will promote the Government’s campaign entitled the Year of Engineering. Dame Xianqgian Jiang is a Professor of Precision Metrology at the University of Huddersfield’s Centre for Precision Technologies.

A University of Huddersfield professor has collaborated with and a world-leading engineering firm as part of the latest research project which has been hailed by a Government body. Professor Rakesh Mishra, an expert in fluid dynamics, has formed a sequence of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) with Weir Valves & Controls UK, part of the UK-based multi-national Weir Group. The projects have led to massive sales increases and cost savings.

Engineering student helps Stephen Hawking find his voice
A student at the University of Huddersfield has had the responsibility of making sure that Stephen Hawking keeps his synthesised voice plus the ability to communicate his influential ideas. Paweł Woźniak, who is completing his Bachelor of Engineering degree at the University, earned a coveted work placement year with Intel, at its Swindon base. He had a wide range of tasks and responsibilities and they included an assignment to visit the physicist in Cambridge in order to troubleshoot the devices he uses to communicate.

Renishaw chief collects Honorary Doctorate award
The Chairman and Chief Executive of Renishaw, Sir David McMurtry, will collect an honorary award from University of Huddersfield, where he and his company have been heavily involved for many years. Sir David is a visiting professor at Huddersfield and Renishaw is a key industrial partner in the University’s EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology. He has the same role with its successor, the EPSRC-funded Future Metrology Hub, a £40 million research centre.

Activity day encourages young people to study engineering
At the University of Huddersfield’s Engineering Open House Day, local children took part in a ‘New Inventions’ poetry workshop, reverse engineering of toys and a peek behind-the-scenes of a world-leading rail research institute. The day was part of a nationwide initiative entitled 'Engineer a Better World' by the Institution of Engineering and Technology to encourage more young people to choose engineering as a career.
