Adjacent to a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Shropshire, pumps made by Landia are ensuring that a farm can cope with huge volumes of excess water it has to contend with during severe downpours.
To protect a major moss complex on the Fenn’s, Whixall, Bettisfield, Wem and Cadney Mosses SSSI, water has to be kept at a very specific level. Any excess flows are released onto surrounding land, including a major egg producer, for whom Landia have installed two 5.5kW pumps to deal with the problem.

A three-phase power supply would normally be required, but by working in close conjunction with Crawford Controls, the inclusion of Invertek Optidrive VTC inverters in the control panel has meant that just a single-phase supply is required, providing a highly energy-efficient pumping solution.
Paul Davies, Landia’s UK & Eire Agricultural Manager, said: “The pump and inverter combination has given the egg producer great peace of mind and no interruption to their business. It is also keeping energy costs under control”.

John Smith, Operations Manager at Crawford Controls, commented: When we looked at the application with Landia, we selected an 11kW 230v Three-phase Optidrive VTC as the best option. By de-rating the drive by 50% we were able to provide the Single-Phase solution required.

Forming an outstanding example of a lowland raised mire, Fenn’s, Whixall, Bettisfield, Wem and Cadney Mosses is a site of national importance for a significant number of rare species, including damselfly, beetles, butterflies, moths and caddisfly. It is also a local stronghold of the adder, as well as providing a breeding environment for curlew, nightjars and sparrowhawks.
