Strong magnetic fields due to sharp tools

Strong magnetic fields due to sharp tools
In an electric drive, magnetic fields have to be created in order to transform electric energy into kinetic energy. The magnetic properties of the motor's main components, referred to as electrical steel sheets, are the decisive factor in the efficiency of the electric motor. Scientists at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have investigated the way these steel sheets are processed and have concluded that using blunt cutting tools deteriorates the magnetic properties of the steel sheets significantly.

Additive manufacturing: the latest promise in production engineering

Additive manufacturing: the latest promise in production engineering
Additive manufacturing processes are the major topic for the future of production engineering. Applications range from producing machine parts of metal through to 3D printing of concrete. Two international symposia, currently taking place at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), illustrate the bandwidth of high-tech additive manufacturing, and give insight into the multifarious expertise existing at the TUM.

The inner workings of Otto Lilienthal’s gliding apparatus

The inner workings of Otto Lilienthal’s gliding apparatus
More than 125 years ago, Otto Lilienthal laid the foundation for modern aviation with his innovative gliding apparatus, the “Normal Segelapparat”. Only four specimens of the gliding apparatus have survived to this day, one of them at home in Deutsches Museum in Munich. Computer tomography investigations carried out by researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in collaboration with Airbus have for the first time provided a glimpse into the inner workings of the construction design.
