When John Ambler, Manufacturing Manager at Amcor Flexibles; one of the world’s largest suppliers of flexible packaging to many of the UK’s leading brands and retailers, was given the go ahead to create a production centre of excellence at his Ilkeston site, his goal was to satisfy both the need for improved efficiency and operator convenience. He needed to reduce material wastage, reduce labour costs and down-time. His aim was to utilise the latest technology to feed material from external silos and additive/master-batch bins to 5 x 3 layer co-extrusion lines and 1 single layer extrusion line. It was necessary for the plant to run 24/7 – 355 days a year in quantities with annual volumes in excess of 18,000 tonnes. The system had to be 100% reliable with no breakdowns and would be delivered to strict timetables and within budget.
If your material supplier requires you to take a minimum quantity when you order, it can mean a storage problem. We know for example, 10 tonnes of material on pallets can take up a lot of space. One solution is of course, to install an external silo. An excellent option if you have the privilege of the space, the funding and the planning permission.
