Steam versus thermal fluid

Steam versus thermal fluid
Steam has been a valuable servant to the human race, from a means of powering engines to a method of cooking food. However, there’s one area where steam has been outdone in recent years – heat transfer using thermal fluid. Here Clive Jones, CEO of Global Heat Transfer outlines the benefits of using thermal fluids instead of steam in a heat transfer process. Historically, if heat transfer was needed in a chemical process and heating via naked flame wasn’t feasible, steam was the preferred method.

The more, the merrier

The more, the merrier
After analysing 168 heat transfer fluid systems Global Heat Transfer has concluded that annual or bi-annual testing of mineral-based thermal fluids is inadequate when maintaining a healthy heat transfer system. Results revealed that more frequent sampling and chemical analysis improves the health of mineral-based heat transfer fluids, which in the long-term, results in cost saving across the system.

More focus on heat transfer safety needed

In response to new health and safety guidelines from the Sentencing Council, Global Heat Transfer is calling for companies to implement robust training plans on the safe operation and management of thermal fluid and heat transfer systems. New guidelines unveiled last week, suggested that judges should impose fines in relation to the size of the organisation. This means fines would have a bigger economic impact on organisations, illustrating the importance of operating in a safe environment.
