element14 has launched the 'Fighting Germs' Project14 design challenge. The challenge is engaging element14’s problem-solving designers and engineers to find innovative solutions to fighting germs, one of the most efficient ways to slow the spread of COVID-19.

A range of Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors designed to meet the changing needs of design engineers and address demand for 3D information and extended range created by new use cases are being shipped by Farnell.

To round-up the interview series dedicated to Inspiring Women in Engineering, in association with International Women in Engineering Day, Farnell here speaks to four women with successful careers in the semiconductor industry, and discusses their role in encouraging and inspire future generations. 

Farnell is celebrating International Women in Engineering Day by speaking to female professionals in the industry and highlighting the work they do. One lady they interviewed, Claire Garside is a co-founder from The Foundation for Digital Creativity and a postgraduate researcher at Leeds University. Her teaching background was broad as a Technology subject specialist in secondary education, before transitioning to link with special educational needs as a senior leader in school.

To mark International Women in Engineering day, Farnell is celebrating current women and future generations of females in engineering, and has interviewed some very talented women. As part of this series, Farnell spoke to Christina Wang of Cypress Semiconductors about her experiences in the industry and how she became inspired into the tech industry to begin with.

Starting with Claire Duffield, a Digital Engagement Librarian at Leeds Libraries and despite the quiet atmosphere one would traditionally expect in this kind of working environment, she has had a hugely positive impact on those in her community.

The new resource on the Farnell element14 website provides a range of support information including videos, technical data and industry guideline, as well as covering new developments in the world of maintenance and safety including the impact of legislation and new regulatory regimes.

Top prize in the Farnell element14 University IoT Challenge has been won by a University of West London (UWL) academic. Dr Ying Zhang, senior lecturer in Computer Science at the University’s School of Computing and Engineering, devised ear defenders which can dampen background noise, while amplifying important sounds such as speech and alarms or sirens.Farnee

The electronic design community, element14.com, has announced a new series of Tech Spotlights to be published on a bi-monthly basis to help its community of engineers learn about new topics outside of their specialty.

Two electrical testers - theT6-600 and T6-1000 - from Fluke are on sale at Farnell element14. They use a novel non-contact voltage sensing technique for fast, safe and reliable voltage measurements. The FieldSense technology used in the T6-600 and T6-1000 replaces the traditional test lead contact probe with an open fork construction in which the fork is slid over a conductor and detects the voltage level. Voltages up to 1000V AC can be sensed through the open fork without using test leads.

Designed for quick temperature checks on printed circuit boards and other small electronics the FLIR ETS320 Thermal Imaging camera is available at distributor Farnell element14. It can be used in the laboratory, for accurate quality assurance and factory acceptance testing. Heat can be an important factor in understanding how a system is functioning and the camera provides non-contact thermal measurement through a combination of a high sensitively infrared camera with an integrated stand for hands-free measurement.
