EEF worried about damage to competitiveness without access to skills
EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation has called on the Government to clarify reciprocal rights for EU workers as a matter of urgency as a new survey warns of a recruitment crunch if Britain’s businesses are denied access to skills from across the European Union. The survey is contained in a report published today; “Making migration work for manufacturers: Accessing skills in a post-Brexit world.” This comes on the back of last week’s official data on migration.

Feeling the effects of structural shifts in world trade, UK manufacturing is struggling with business as usual not being an option for exporters or policy makers. Industry is urging the Government to ensure barrier free trade as part of any Brexit deal on the back of new research showing many export destinations are already not as open to trade as they were before the financial crisis and that this is impacting on UK export performance.

According to the head of the UK’s manufacturers, the Government must radically improve and clarify its Brexit strategy with the EU to help firms in the UK and overseas who need to make decisions on investment and jobs. Addressing the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, in Strasbourg last week, Terry Scuoler, Chief Executive of EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation said that British firms face a ‘tipping point’ well before March 2019, when they need to know with certainty what arrangements will be in place when we officially leave the EU.

Apprentices, employers and business leaders met The Princess Royal as she officially opened EEF’s new Technology Hub in Aston, Birmingham last week, on 30th March. The Technology Hub has been designed and equipped to replicate real-life modern engineering and manufacturing workplaces and will be responsible for delivering vital technical skills. It is the result of an ambitious multi-million pound expansion and forms a second site to EEF’s technology training centre – also in Aston - which opened in 2014.
