With some estimates suggesting 60% of all miles driven in the UK will need to be electric to meet 2050 environment targets, it is critical that the advances we make today facilitate the growing electric vehicle (EV) market in the future.

Energy displays have proven highly successful in helping consumers to reduce electricity consumption and will play a significant role in the context of the UK’s national Smart Meter programme. From 16 June 2011 it is no longer legal to place low efficiency motors on the European market. Regulation 640/2009 of the EcoDesign Directive has now come into effect and any motor with an efficiency rating less that IE2 can no longer be placed on the market. Specifically, the Regulations apply to LV motors of type S1 and S3 between the sizes 750W and 375kW.

David Dossett was awarded an MBE this week for services to the Electrical Manufacturing Industry. A key industry figure for 25 years, David led the successful campaign against the harmonisation of plugs and socket outlets in Europe and coordinated the BEAMA worldwide campaign against the counterfeiting of electrical equipment. Under the various projects around the world over 12 million counterfeit products have been seized and destroyed, leading to significant health and safety benefits in the UK and worldwide.

BEAMA has welcomed the Government’s consultation on a package of options for reforming the electricity market. With its focus on affordability, low carbon and security of supply, the association says it goes a long way to reaching the 2050 Pathways aspirations from earlier in 2010, pointing the UK towards an electric future.

Keith Smith is BEAMA’s new Installation Sector deputy director. His key responsibilities include co-ordinating activities across the Industrial, Single Phase and Cable management product groups of BEAMA as well as taking the role of secretary to its Anti-Counterfeit Working Group.

Giving the Coalition Government's views on the future issues of energy policy, Charles Hendry MP, Minister of State for Energy, said BEAMA members are playing a major role in the energy market and the electrotechnical industry has a key role in facing the challenges and opportunities.

BEAMA WELCOMES EST’S HEAT PUMP FIELD TRIAL REPORT BEAMA has welcomed the Energy Saving Trust’s (EST) public report – ‘Getting warmer: a field trial of heat pumps’ - on the interim findings of the UK’s first domestic heat pump field trial. The report is an essential tool to inform the heat pump industry about the positive and negative impact of heat pump design, installation, commissioning and end-use.

BEAMA’s Domestic Water Treatment Association (DWTA) has welcomed the new Part L Domestic Heating Compliance Guide. The guide states that ‘as a minimum’ chemical inhibitors should be BuildCert- approved. This applies to new-build systems, and when changing a boiler in retrofit circumstances.
