This is a tremendous outcome given the extent of Katie’s competition in this region. She was up against a large number of apprentices from blue chip engineering companies and in particular those from Devonport Dockyards and Rolls Royce.
This is the second EEF award that Katie has received. She won the South West heat of the Apprentice of the Year Award in 2006 and went on to compete at national level. The Future Manufacturing Award Scheme is in its inaugural year and the EEF describes it as a mechanism to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the bravest, boldest and best in manufacturing industry.
Katie works for linear motion specialist, HepcoMotion® with whom she has recently completed her apprenticeship. With BTEC and HNC qualifications in mechanical engineering already under her belt, Katie has now embarked on a foundation degree at Exeter College. She is employed by HepcoMotion® as a design assistant in its R&D department.
“In addition to a written submission on my apprenticeship, I was interviewed on technical aspects of my work by the judging panel. I also gave a presentation on an animation project I had undertaken,” Katie explained. “Using Solidworks I created animations of one of our linear motion systems, the HDS2. This will now be used by our sales team to show customers the scope and potential of this heavy duty range.”
Commenting on Katie’s latest achievement HepcoMotion® MD, Ray Hall said, “We are so proud of her. As a company we are fully committed to apprenticeships. It not only makes sound business sense but also gives us a real buzz to see our young engineers developing and succeeding.”
