MORE ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIPS WILL MANUFACTURE SUCCESS, SAYS INDUSTRY LEADER
Ann Watson, managing director of specialist awarding organisation, EAL (EMTA Awards Limited), has welcomed a government announcement to provide funding for 10,000 higher and advanced apprenticeship places, saying that a focus on high skilled workers is vital if industries like manufacturing and engineering are to prosper.
Watson says: “This funding, which forms part of the government’s previously announced financial support for boosting apprenticeships, demonstrates a commitment to higher skills and their importance to business. Britain’s engineering and manufacturing firms face a shortfall of skilled labour and any move which helps to plug the gap is essential. Small and medium-sized firms in particular need support to take on apprentices in these straightened financial times, as they may simply not have the capital to make such a worthwhile long-term investment. Without this investment in young talent, the outlook for these sectors could be very bleak – and this would have a serious impact on the wider UK economy.”

She continues: “This announcement is particularly timely as, in a few weeks time, young people all over the UK will face making important decisions about their future as they receive their GCSE results. The government’s support for vocational education demonstrates the very real value of an apprenticeship, and we hope this additional funding will demonstrate to schools, parents and students the value of an apprenticeship.”
