Now in volume production, the SKF Wheel End Monitor has been designed to alert truck operators to the early signs of damage to truck and trailer wheel bearings. Simply mounted on the wheel rim, this self-contained monitoring device helps to track possible damage and wear long before bearing failure occurs, allowing operators to schedule any repairs within their normal maintenance patterns and avoid unnecessary downtime of their vehicles.

NSK’s experience of the petrochemical industry was pivotal recently in solving a recurring bearing problem, which was resulting in unacceptable downtime at a UK refinery. The problem concerned a centrifugal pump that was critical to the refinery operation. The pump was failing on average three times a year; and with breakdown costs running at €1.500 per hour, this was resulting in losses of €27.870 per year.

A new filter plant at the BOS plant on the Scunthorpe Corus steelworks is using hybrid design gearboxes combining planetary and helical gear technology to open and close the doors on the iron desulphurisation process. The new installation is being used to capture the fumes created during the desulphurisation process, and has built in order to improve the plants environmental performance. The door drives needed to be compact yet still able to provide high torque output and low energy input, combined with strength and durability. SKF has launched its latest generation of SKF ConCentra roller bearing units, which can be mounted 20 minutes faster than conventional split housings, saving costs both initially in mounting and later in maintenance. Additionally, the units enable more accurate mounting, resulting in high bearing performance and longer bearing life. Subsequently, this contributes to improved performance in manufacturing machinery and ancillary equipment.
