FLIR Systems has announced the FLIR VP50-2 Non-Contact Voltage Detector and Flashlight with three alarm types for safer, easier field-troubleshooting and verification of electrical installations. The VP50-2 is designed for professionals who service electrical equipment in residential, commercial, and industrial facilities to reliably check whether an AC circuit is live before beginning work; detect voltage on exposed conducting parts or through insulation; identify live wires within electrical panels, switches, and outlets; and trace live wires and map circuits.

During a routine inspection at a substation, a Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) electrician felt heat blast his face as he passed within a couple of metres of an energised transformer bank. Some heat is expected, of course, but the intensity of it alarmed him. He immediately grabbed a handheld thermal imaging camera from his van and verified that there was a major issue and the system was shut down for investigation.

FLIR Systems has announced the latest generation of the FLIR Brickstream 3D Gen 2 people counting sensor. This new version includes an employee filtering feature designed to provide retail and shopping businesses with more accurate customer traffic data and sales conversion metrics. The employee filtering feature uses a combination of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology and employee-worn tags to automatically identify and remove staff from customer counts, a process that can otherwise be manual or missing in retail environments.

It has been announced that FLIR Systems has published a new application spotlight that addresses the challenge that electrical power stations face in detecting gas leaks from their Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) circuit breakers. Sulfur hexafluoride circuit breakers protect electrical power stations and distribution systems by interrupting electric currents, when tripped by a protective relay.

As part of a new partnership, FLIR Systems and Providence Photonics have announced a new Quantitative Optical Gas Imaging (qOGI) technology, which is designed to work exclusively with FLIR GF-Series cameras. Quantitative OGI represents a critical step forward in the world of optical gas imaging because it eliminates the need for secondary sampling devices to quantify gas emissions. How well the system is able to quantify a specific gas is a function of the FLIR camera, which may be more sensitive to one compound than another.

  It has been announced that the GF-series Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) cameras from FLIR Systems are now available with interchangeable 24°, 14.5° and 6° lenses. This new flexibility has been introduced to maximise the gas leak finding capabilities of these popular cameras.

The FLIR identiFINDER R440is the latest addition to FLIR Systems identiFINDER R-Series handheld radiation detection product line. The FLIR identiFINDER R440 provides users one hand operability, rapid detection, and highly accurate identification during survey missions and secondary screening operations.

An application note has been published by FLIR Systems which describes how a Belgian storage tank inspection company are using the FLIR GFx320 optical gas imaging camera to monitor for fugitive emissions in hazardous locations. Tank storage companies cannot afford to have chemical leaks as a result of ageing assets or corroding storage tanks. 

Two high-speed, longwave thermal cameras for demanding science and research applications have been introduced by FLIR Systems. The X6570sc high-speed infrared camera offers the accuracy and microsecond-precision of FLIR's mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) detector paired with an intuitive user experience, so researchers can set-up quickly and get  working faster. FLIR engineered the X6570sc to provide researchers with measurement accuracy, advanced processing algorithms, and connectivity.

Cooled MWIR detector technology and compact handheld design feature on the GF335 Broadband Infrared Camera from FLIR Systems. The combination provides a portable, highly sensitive infrared camera with fast frame rates. The GF335 is a high sensitivity, low noise, cooled thermal camera that excels at detecting faint heat signatures. It is well suited to a wide range of applications, including use on test ranges, non-destructive testing, research, and scientific applications.

Reaching a definitive asset purchase agreement, FLIR systems have acquired the business of Point Grey Research for approximately $253m. Founded in 1997 Point Grey is a company in the development of advanced visible imaging cameras and solutions that are used in industrial automation systems, medical diagnostic equipment, people counting systems, intelligent traffic systems, military and defence products, and advanced mapping systems.
