SKF’s Rotor Positioning Sensor Bearing Unit cuts fuel consumption and C02 emissions
SKF, the world’s leading knowledge engineering company, has launched the new Rotor Positioning Sensor Bearing Unit designed to improve the performance of automotive electric power steering systems, the new bearing unit can reduce fuel consumption by around 0.2-0.3 litres/100km and C02 emissions by up to 3%, compared with conventional hydraulic steering systems.
/>By combining high performance bearing functionality with absolute angular position sensing technology in a single compact unit, this new device provides exceptional accuracy and repeatable control of the electric motors used in power steering systems, the unit works by determining the absolute rotor position. Furthermore, this robust unit can withstand external instability, including temperature and magnetic fields, mechanical vibration and electromagnetic interference, while minimised torque pulsations also reduce motor noise.

Just as importantly, the compact axial design of the new Rotor Positioning Sensor Bearing Unit offers greater flexibility for motor designers.

In particular, advanced magnetic technology with low current consumption and plug and play features enable easy integration into existing electronic control systems to dramatically reduce the time and costs needed for installation and setup.

Versions of this sensor bearing unit have previously been used in Valeo’s StARS (Stop-Start) alternators, to provide a powerful, accurate, repeatable and control unit to stop and re-start engines smoothly at the correct time. In addition, this technology can equally be applied in the electric motors of hybrid and full electric vehicles.

Edward Holweg, Director of Product and Systems Development for SKF’s Automotive Division, said, “In order to contribute to the target of zero defect products for our customers’ OEM units, the development of the Rotor Positioning Sensor Bearing Unit has been carried out using Design for Six Sigma methodologies together with SKF mechatronic simulation tools for optimum system configuration. In addition, 100% product testing has been carried out at the end of the SKF production line, so we are confident that our products offer exceptional performance in a wide range of conditions.”
