Angle sensing for extreme environments

Further expanding Variohm EuroSensor’s range of precision positon sensors, the new RSX-7900 angle sensor from German manufacturer Novotechnik provides IP69K protection, extremely long life and ISO13849 PL-d safety compliance in a very robust non-contacting design that suits continuous duty in mobile construction and agricultural machinery, and other extreme environment applications.

The sensor is offered in six standard measuring ranges with angles from 0 … 60 to 360 degrees with unrestricted rotation. Range resolution is 12-bit across a 4…20 mA output with linearity specified at 2% at ≥ 90 degrees, whilst repeatability is 0.2 degrees and update rate is 5 kHz. Single and dual redundant versions are available and the non-contacting NOVOHALL Hall Effect measurement technology yields a 100 million movement life even under the most arduous shock and vibration conditions. Redundant versions can be validated to ISO 13849 PL-d functional safety standard. Type E1 approval has also been obtained from the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Germany. (KBA). The heavy-duty RSX-7900 is also available with a CANopen interface.

The durable sensor design includes a fully sealed anodized aluminium housing with a stainless steel shaft for enhanced corrosion protection with salt and spray resistance. Axial and radial shaft loading is up to 300 N thanks to a double row angular contact ball bearing design. Although extremely ruggedized the compact 70 mm diameter sensor has a nominal length of only 35 mm and is available with a wide choice of shaft styles for maximum installation flexibility.

The RSX-7900 angle sensor operates from a generous 9 to 34 V DC input providing scope for 12 and 24 volt mobile vehicle systems and further flexibility for electrical connection includes cable gland and M12 connectors.
