ANOTHER SINGLE WHEEL LIFT FOR CARMARTHENSHIRE TYRE SERVICES
Carmarthenshire Tyre Services has installed another Single Wheel Lift from Penny Hydraulics on its latest service vehicle to enable its fitters and engineers to carry out their work without any manual handling or lifting. This is the fifth vehicle operated by the tyre service specialist to be fitted with the handling device. The manufacturer also provides a range of support and maintenance services to ensure legal compliance and operational reliability for the equipment it has supplied.
“Every van I have bought for the business since we started has been fitted with a Single Wheel Lift,” says Delme Owens, owner of Carmarthenshire Tyre Services. “Health and safety is a priority and it’s important to us that we provide the employees with the best tools that we can.”

Carmarthenshire Tyre Services was established over six years ago to offer a full range of services for cars, commercial and agricultural vehicles in and around the South Wales town of Carmarthen. During this time the company has grown to become one of the largest independents in the area. It has a central depot in the town and runs a fleet of three Iveco Daily service vehicles. The depot has facilities for car repairs as well as tyre services and the vans are used to offer mobile services principally for commercial and agricultural customers.

“I’ve been in the tyre service industry for many years and had used the Single Wheel Lift before,” says Delme Owens. “I knew it was the right tool for our vehicles when I started the business.”

The Single Wheel Lift is a vehicle mounted platform lift with maximum working load of up to 250kg that can be installed at the rear or side door of a van for handling tyres of all sizes including large commercials. The unit's unique rollered platform and easy-to-operate locking device also creates the ideal tool for re-grooving tyres inside or outside the vehicle. During operation the platform can be lowered onto the ground to create a stable area for working and to allow tyres and wheels to be rolled on and off easily without any lifting.

The platform retracts fully inside the vehicle when not in use and, because a wheel or tyre can remain in position, there is minimal impact on the load space and carrying capacity of the vehicle. The tyre and wheel can be locked onto the platform during transportation for additional safety and to reduce the risk of damage to the load, device or vehicle. This ability to handle loads and act as a support during working makes the Single Wheel Lift an ideal accessory for mobile service vehicles. Recent design advances made by Penny Hydraulics using its in-house CAD facilities have allowed the manufacturer to reduce the weight of the device without affecting its performance or reliability.

“I believe in the product,” says Delme Owens. “It’s reasonably priced and doesn’t take up a lot of room or weight inside the vehicle. Ongoing costs are very low as well.”

The latest vehicle to be equipped with the device is Carmarthenshire Tyre Services’ new Iveco Daily 35S12. The platform lift was installed inside the rear doors by the company’s local commercial vehicle dealer to the specification provided by the manufacturer.

Penny Hydraulics provides annual statutory inspections to ensure the tyre company’s equipment complies with the LOLER regulations. These inspections, and the resulting certification, are required by any company using vehicle mounted load handling equipment. Penny Hydraulics also undertakes routine maintenance checks during its visits to the tyre depot so that the equipment continues to offer trouble free operation. Any unscheduled issues are managed through a next day response service level agreement. All inspections, maintenance checks and service calls are carried out by one of the company’s own team of service engineers who are located throughout the UK.

“The Single Wheel Lift is extremely reliable and in six and a half years since we had the first one we have not needed a service call for a repair,” says Delme Owens. “We receive excellent backup and support from Penny Hydraulics and the level of service they provide is second to none.”
