Milwaukee Cylinder offers the SIL 3 Capable Certification

Milwaukee Cylinder has announced its ability to offer the SIL 3 Capable Certification as an option for all non-rotational mounting styles of its popular H and MH series products. SIL 3 Certification is by the third party organisation, exida. As a leading authority in the field of functional safety, exida provides qualified customers with certification to a number of functional safety and security standards.

SIL is an industry measure of reliability, and is used as part of the Functional Safety Standard IEC 61508:2010 to calculate risk protection in a system. When a safety designer is using IEC 61508, SIL components are required in system design.

To achieve this certification, applicable Milwaukee Cylinder designs were subject to a detailed reliability analysis by exida experts. This analysis demonstrated the product design met the stringent SIL 3 requirements. Additionally, Milwaukee Cylinder operations and quality processes to be used in its SIL 3 products were also audited by exida as part of the certification, and found to comply with the rigorous SIL 3 standards.

“SIL certification, especially by a third party organisation like exida is difficult, but I knew our designs and processes were up to the task. I’m especially proud because SIL certification amongst cylinder manufacturers is rare, opening up a new and needed service by Milwaukee Cylinder to its customers,” said Douglas Lacina, Global Marketing and Engineering Leader, Milwaukee Cylinder. “We have always been known to be reliable, and now we offer the certification and required documentation to use our SIL 3 products in functional safety designs.”

“Mechanical devices used in safety applications are critical, and sometimes even forgotten,” commented Chris O’Brien, exida Partner. “Milwaukee Cylinder has an excellent design process which certainly meets the needs of these critical applications.”
