SCORPION PROVIDES AN INTEGRATED SOLUTION FOR SOUTHERN ELECTRIC CONTRACTING
When its parent company, Scottish and Southern Energy, acquired a 50% stake in Scotia Gas Networks, Southern Electric Contracting was the obvious choice to carry out the refurbishing of the company’s mechanical and electrical facilities at its headquarters in Horley, West Sussex. However, when it came to the supply and installation of a power support package to support Scotia Gas Network’s electrical supply and IT equipment handling the details of company’s 5.7 million customers, Southern Electric Contracting turned to Scorpion Power Systems.
Having previously supplied standby generators to Southern Electric Contracting, Scorpion Power Systems’s reputation for quality products and excellent customer service was well known to the company. Therefore, when Satwant Lola, Contracts Engineer at Southern Electric Contracting needed a company to install the power support system at Scotia Gas Networks he knew Scorpion had the products and technical expertise to provide a totally integrated service.

“Over the years Southern Electric Contracting has received excellent service from Scorpion Power Systems and so I didn’t hesitate to contact them when the decision was made to install the power support system at Scotia Gas Networks”, said Satwant Lola.

Following an in-depth survey Scorpion suggested the installation of a complete power support package. This included two 60kVA UPS to provide 12 minutes back-up power together with two Scorpion Powerhouse DD172 diesel generators synchronised together to provide an N+1 configuration for greater resilience and controlled through a dual mutual control system and remote monitoring unit. The generators and UPS are housed in a weatherproof and acoustics canopy fitted with outlet louvres and ducting.

The generators are also fitted with a number of special features to ensure that they are always ready for use and meet all current regulations. These include an on set battery charger and jacket heater to aid cold starting as well a steel bund to retain any diesel spillage and fire shutdown kit.

“All installation work was carried out by Scorpion with minimum disruption to staff and services”, concluded Satwant Lola. “Scorpion’s power support system will ensure that Scotia Gas Networks and its customers will not be inconvenienced when a powercut occurs”.
