PTP enables higher performance Ethernet switching

Updating its AIRES GbE Rugged Switch with New Precision Timing Protocol (PTP), Kontron has announced it has enhanced its next-generation Kontron high-performance COBALT(TM) system with a removable solid state drive (RSSD) bay option, which enables higher performance Ethernet switching. Giving designers maximum flexibility to select and configure the right amount of storage capacity as an ordering option without modifying the system, COBALT supports up to two RSSDs via a front removable drive bay.

Offering COBALT with an RSSD option also eases the ability to upgrade to different storage devices and higher capacities ensuring existing systems are adaptable to evolving requirements.  Long-term flexibility is assured, and designers are not forced to build systems from the ground up each time the application's storage requirements change.

RSSD Option for Kontron COBALT systems
Kontron's COBALT provides a complete, rugged small form factor system based on its hardened COMe Type 6 module form factor module that integrates the latest Intel dual-core processor architecture and uses a specialised carrier board assembly. Highly scalable and without ITAR restrictions, COBALT offers power-to-performance optimisation making it a suitable platform for applications requiring high performance, reduced size, weight and power (SWaP) such as those in the military, avionics, commercial avionics, mining, smart grid, homeland security, transportation, and oil and gas industries.

Designed for the harshest environments, it has a rugged, IP67 environmentally-sealed enclosure and supports extended temperature operation from -40 to 71°C. COBALT also features broad and flexible I/O with USB 3.0/2.0, gigabit Ethernet (GbE), HDMI, VGA, Audio, GPIO and Serial ports.

Kontron AIRES GbE Rugged Switch with PTP
Kontron also announces its upgraded AIRES GbE Rugged Switch with new Precision Time Protocol (PTP) features. AIRES' new capabilities provide a rich and versatile feature set enabling streamlined integration of higher performance Ethernet switching functions on custom base board designs. These IEEE1588v2 PTP features enable precise timing synchronisation and packet time stamping for time sensitive applications. Designed for next-generation applications requiring outstanding bandwidth and complex network routing, the upgraded AIRES switch is based on Kontron's ESC1600-PTP Ethernet Switch module. It supports up to four ports running at 10Gb/s and up to 24 ports at 1Gb/s support. In addition, AIRES has built-In test capabilities that enable effective switch maintenance.

As a fully managed Layer 2 and Layer 3 GbE switch, AIRES delivers IPv4/IPv6 routing and full management capabilities. It supports a powerful set of CLI, Telnet, Web and SNMP management interfaces to configure the entire set of protocols and parameters including Multicasting, QoS and Security. Offered in an IP67 sealed system, Kontron designed and tested AIRES to survive in the severe environmental conditions found in military, avionics, commercial avionics, mining, smart grid, homeland security, rail transportation and oil and gas markets.
