For the second year in a row, Team Germany - led by students from the university of Darmstadt - has taken first place at the national Solar Decathlon which took place in Washington, DC in October. In this competition, hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy 20 teams of college and university students compete to design, build and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house.
HELUKABEL supported Team Germany by providing its SOLARFLEX-X PV1-F – a cable with VDE and TÜV approval that is especially developed for the use in photovoltaic systems. The cable is characterized by an extreme robust and abrasion resistant jacket material (required if the cable rubs against the substructure in high winds) as well as an excellent UV , ozone-, weather- and hydrolyses resistance.
Marc Luksch, Director of HELUKABEL USA, comments: “We are so proud having been part of this team. For more than 15 years HELUKABEL has been conducting continuous research to develop products for renewable energies and to make a contribution to an environmentally friendly generation of energy”.
The winner’s “Cube House, which was covered by shiny, black solar panels on every available surface, produced a surplus of electricity even during three days of straight rain throughout the two-week long contest. Team Germany was the only team to earn the full points in this competition category. The extra energy the house produced was pumped into the energy grid of a Washington-area power company.
