Outstanding achievement awards for women engineers

Two young women from Cavendish Nuclear have been recognised by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) for their achievements in the industry.

Jessica Hollingworth (pictured right) won Learner of the Year at the awards held last week and Sarah Griffiths was a finalist in the Women in Engineering Award. Both women had been part of a graduate scheme run by Cavendish Nuclear.

The awards are a celebration of the achievements and successes of individuals, companies and training providers in the engineering construction industry.

Presenting Hollingworth, from London, with her award was Tracey Shelley (pictured left) of the British Chemical Engineering Contractors Association. Hollingworth joined Cavendish in 2013 and was later seconded over to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) for two years, now reformed as part of Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). During the secondment, Hollingworth worked in the Office for Nuclear Development working across all aspects of UK nuclear new build. The secondment was aimed at promoting best practice and sharing industry expertise between Government and businesses.

After winning, Hollingworth said: “I’m still in shock to be honest. To be recognised by the ECITB for something I love doing is fantastic. Babcock and Cavendish Nuclear gave me the best start in my career and I was able to achieve so much because of the amazing support network there is for graduates. I got the opportunity to work in Government on policy white papers, commercial strategy and project management. It was a great experience and I’m looking forward to applying what I’ve learnt into the next phase of my career.”

Sarah Griffiths, who was nominated for the Women in Engineering Award, was recognised for her achievements in encouraging more women into engineering. A previous Arkwright Scholar, she now mentors within that scheme and supports Cavendish Nuclear’s dedicated STEM programme.

“I’m delighted to have been nominated with the competition being so great. Cavendish Nuclear do a great job in overturning the perception that engineering is a dull and dirty job reserved for men in hard hats.”

Simon Bowen, Managing Director of Cavendish Nuclear, added: “The whole team is extremely proud of everything both Jessica and Sarah have achieved, especially with the competition being so tough.

“A career in engineering is a hugely rewarding and exciting one, one that stretches and challenges individuals – and that’s what our graduates and apprentices get when they join us. Cavendish Nuclear are committed to the STEM programme across our businesses with all of our graduates this year enrolling as STEM ambassadors.

“As a profession, however, we know there is much more we can, and should, be doing to encourage more women to get involved. This year we are delighted that over a third of our graduate intake is female and they’re already working to support the next generation of young engineers out there.”
