John McAslan + Partners has completed its third major building for Lancaster University. Won through international design competition, the innovative design for this new 4,700 square meter facility houses a diverse range of workshops, laboratories and academic offices. The design is also highly sustainable, with a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating.
The building was officially opened by the University’s Chancellor, the Rt Hon Alan Milburn, on 4th March 2015.
The heaviest mechanical and engineering workshops occupy the ground floor, whilst upper levels accommodate smaller laboratories, academic and support spaces. The building’s raw aesthetic and exposed concrete frame required careful co-ordination of the extensive mechanical and electrical services, achieved by a shared BIM model between architect, structural engineer and the M&E subcontractor ahead of site installation.
Mr Milburn said: “What is exciting at this moment is looking forward to the University’s future in engineering and technology and it is great to hear of the progress that has been made. The work of the Commission I chair has shown some difficulties in encouraging children and young adults from less well-off backgrounds to enter engineering professions. Universities are in prime position to inspire next-gen engineers through their outreach work and by providing superb facilities like this one.”
