Manufacturers receive help service in tackling new regulations

A Broadcast Receiver Service has been launched to help manufacturers meet the new requirements of the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) by TÜV SÜD Product Service. It is the only laboratory in the UK to offer a complete RED broadcast receiver test and certification service.

The introduction of the RED means that manufacturers of broadcast receivers must now re-test and re-certify products for sale in the European Union and European Free Trade Association countries.

After 13th June 2017, products such as satellite, TV and radio receivers, can no longer be sold legally under the old EMC Directive, and must be withdrawn from the market. Meanwhile, any new products are required to comply immediately with the RED.

TÜV SÜD worked with manufacturers and a global broadcaster to agree best practice for test methods. The bespoke RED Broadcast Receiver Service was then developed in-house to deliver manufacturers a complete test and certification solution, which addresses the full spectrum of safety, EMC and RF. The UK team will offer the service to its customers in Europe and worldwide via TÜV SÜD’s Global Market Access service.

Phil Evans, Business Line Manager for Telecoms at TÜV SÜD Product Service, said: “Both the requirements and the number of products that fall under the RED have changed. Consequently, many broadcast receiver manufacturers are finding achieving compliance to be a significant challenge as they have never before been required to undertake RF testing.”

Evans added: “Previously their products fell under the EMC Directive. This is no longer the case, which has opened up a can of worms in terms of understanding the requirements of the RED and having the ability to undertake tests to meet the June 2017 deadline. With just four months to go, manufacturers need to act fast to avoid their existing products being withdrawn from sale, or time-to-market delays for new devices.”
