Harder than nails ceramic bearings can withstand Mars conditions

A range of non-magnetic, highly corrosion resistant ceramic bearings have been launched by specialist supplier of miniature bearings, SMB Bearings, which has the capability of facing extreme conditions at either ends of the temperature spectrum, even those found on Mars. With implications for the chemical, food and beverage, marine and pharmaceutical industry, this product launch will keep machinery moving smoothly in the harshest of environments.

These full ceramic bearings, not to be confused with hybrid ceramic bearings, can be made from Zirconium Dioxide (ZrO2) or Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) and can perform in temperatures ranging from -200°C to 800°C. This means businesses operating in harsh environments can now use bearings that are fit for purpose.

"As these bearings can face extreme environments both in terms of temperature and pH level, they have positive implications for a range of industries," said Chris Johnson, Managing Director at SMB Bearings. "An order has even come in for use in a vehicle on Mars, a planet that can face temperatures as low as 125°C. The pharmaceutical industry is another good example of where these bearings can be used. With strong acids and alkalis used regularly, there is a great need for highly corrosion resistant bearings.

"In these extreme applications, it just as important for the correct lubrication to used with the right type bearings," continued Johnson. "We have a range of chemically resistant lubricants that can be used at extreme temperatures to ensure these ceramic bearings last the lifetime that they were designed for."

SMB Bearings' ceramic bearings are available as full complement (no cage) or with a cage made from PEEK or PTFE. The company also provide a bespoke relubrication service to maintain bearings throughout their use.
