Scorpion upgrade of WRN standby system keeps expansion on track
New customers to WRN are assured of no breaks in transmission of its global radio networks and specialist broadcast services due to the installation of a new standby power system at the company’s London headquarters. Designed and supplied by integrated power supply company Scorpion Power Systems, part of the shentongroup, the state-of-the-art standby power system has been installed to facilitate further expansion to WRN’s customer portfolio, which has experienced a hundred-percent upturn in the past three years.
Since its foundation in 1992, WRN has exploited the opportunities presented by the enormous changes to broadcasting. The company’s large and expanding portfolio includes broadcast, transmission, Internet, consulting and commercial services are provided to the world’s leading private and public radio and television organisations. Ensuring that all its services can be relayed without fear of a power outage is integral to WRN’s success.

Scorpion installed the original standby power system soon after the company was established. WRN and its engineers have provided regular servicing of the system. When the decision was made to upgrade the system WRN once again turned to Scorpion Power Systems. Following an in-depth survey Scorpion suggested the installation of a 30kVA UPS to provide six minutes back-up power together with an 115kVA continuously rated diesel generator.

Where a UPS is fitted, power passes through the AMF changeover panel to the UPS and then onward to the critical loads. Heavy loads, aircon, motors, etc. are supplied before the UPS. When the mains supply fails, or goes out of acceptable limits, the AMF panel disconnects the faulty mains supply, the critical loads continue to be supported by the UPS with no break in supply. Other heavy loads, such as air con etc, supplied before the UPS, will experience a break in power supply of approximately 20 seconds. The AMF panel will automatically start the generator. After a preset time delay, the generator will pick up the load.

Supplied in a super-silent acoustic weatherproof canopy, the Scorpion diesel generator has been installed in a bund to retain any diesel spillage and is fitted with a number of special features to ensure that the generator is always ready for use. These include a heater to aid cold starting, fire shutdown system and a remote monitoring panel that enables the generator to be checked quickly and easily.

“Without upgrading our standby power system we would not have been able expand our client base”, said Dean Haddock, Operations Manager at WRN. “Over the years we have received excellent service from Scorpion Power Systems and so didn’t hesitate to contact them when the decision was made to go ahead with the upgrade. All installation and electrical work was carried out by the company with minimum disruption to staff and services”.
