The new CPX-CEC module provides machine builders with a technically elegant means of overseeing all the units in a CPX terminal – regardless of whether they are for pneumatic or electric drives, or I/O functions – using a fast, easy-to-program controller. Suitable for single and multi-axis applications, the CPX-CEC can operate autonomously or in conjunction with a host controller such as a master PLC, and can also be used as an intelligent slave in fieldbus-based systems, to provide localised signal pre-processing.
Festo enters low-cost electric actuator marketFesto has entered the low-cost electric actuator market with the launch of a unique toothed belt drive axis which marries cost-optimised design rules with precision engineering. Costing 65 percent less than Festo's popular EGC series high performance electromechanical axes, the new ELGR toothed belt axis sets a new price-performance standard for the motion control industry. Designed primarily for applications involving relatively short stroke lengths and low moments on the guide, such as pick & place tasks and transporting small masses, the ELGR axis is also ideal for positioning, centring and pushing functions on conveyor belts, and for activating safety doors on processing machines.
High performance electric cylinders use innovative tubular linear motorFesto has launched two series of high performance electric cylinders employing the company's unique new tubular linear motor technology. Both series feature similar dimensions and mechanical interfaces as their pneumatic counterparts, making them true 'drop-in' electrically-driven alternatives. The cylinders offer fully programmable, closed-loop position, acceleration and speed control, and are ideal for applications that demand extremely fast and accurate positioning capabilities.
Unique self-adjusting pneumatic cushioning system promises dramatic reduction in machine set-up timesFesto has developed a unique self-adjusting pneumatic cushioning system, which is now available as a build to order option for the company's popular DSNU series round cylinder pneumatic actuators. The new system employs innovative, patented air channel geometry to provide phased venting of the cushioning air. The system automatically adapts its characteristics to suit the cylinder's prevailing load and speed conditions, to provide optimum end-position cushioning.
Festo unveils entirely new class of products – high performance linear motor based actuatorsFesto has unveiled an entirely new class of electric actuators, based on very high performance linear motors. The first product in this class is an ultra precise linear motor axis with an air bearing, which is available for immediate delivery. Subsequent products, due to be launched progressively throughout this year, include three types of electric cylinder, all featuring unique – and heavily patented – tubular motor technology.
Festo and V-viz enter partnership to promote use of intelligent vision systems in automationFesto UK has entered into a strategic Partnership with the specialist machine vision company V-viz Ltd, to promote the use of intelligent vision systems in automation. The affiliation comes at a particularly pertinent time for manufacturers seeking to counter the effects of the recession by maximising the efficiency and quality of their production processes – these are areas where high speed image capture and analysis can play a vital role.
Festo launches innovative category 4 safety valve for pneumatically-operated automationFesto has launched an electrically-operated pneumatic soft-start and exhaust valve that provides safer start-up and quick and reliable venting of compressed air supplies in the event of an emergency. Known as the MS6-SV, the valve provides machine builders with a compact, all-in-one solution for maximising the safety of automation systems. It is fully compliant with the new EN ISO 13849-1 standard on machinery safety and is certified to categories 3 & 4.
Bionic penguins exhibit collective behaviour at the Hannover FairFesto's Bionic Learning Network has developed two colonies of bionic penguins that demonstrate collective behaviour. This type of behaviour – which psychologists also call crowd behaviour – refers to social processes which emerge in a spontaneous manner when members of a group interact. In robotic terms, each penguin is an autonomous self-regulating unit that is free to explore its defined environment using complex built-in navigation and communication facilities, and is capable of modifying its behaviour in the presence of others, to fulfil a group purpose. Festo to demonstrate innovative control solutions for the water industry at IWEX 2009Festo will be demonstrating how its latest modular controllers and actuators enable system designers to use a task-optimised blend of electrical and pneumatic technology for process control, to help minimise cost and maintenance overheads.
Intelligent control module accommodates multiple electric drives for coordinated movementFesto has launched an intelligent multi-axis control module for electric drives. The new CPX-CMXX module is a highly integrated plug-in unit designed for use with Festo's renowned CPX series of multifunctional control terminals. The module is particularly easy to configure and set up using Festo's FCT software tool, and helps dispense with the need for a considerable amount of system wiring, making it a very elegant drop-in control solution for single and multiple axis drives. These attributes will undoubtedly prove popular with OEMs and system integrators seeking to reduce their time to market.
Festo and LeekSeek International announce joint initiative to combat energy wastageInnovation leaders Festo and leakage management specialists LeekSeek International have announced a joint initiative to combat energy wastage. The two companies are launching a unique energy-saving service for users of pneumatic automation, which provides comprehensive site-wide detection, management and resolution of compressed air leakages. The potential cost savings are huge – industry analysts estimate that European manufacturers currently waste 25-35 per cent of the compressed air that they generate, mainly through leakage caused by bad maintenance practices.
Friends, robots, countrymen, lend me your earsEngineered Arts Ltd has created a unique interactive robot - named RoboThespian™ - that is currently wowing audiences around the world. Initially developed to provide entertaining semi-autonomous theatrical performances, the life-sized robot's capabilities have recently been expanded to facilitate far higher levels of audience interaction. The robot's siblings are now much in demand at science and technology centres as highly animated public orators, tireless front-of-house presenters and generally all-round benevolent funsters!
