Technology, Design and Innovation challenge goes online for 2020
The Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA) have launched the 2020 edition of the Technology, Design and Innovation (TDI) Challenge. The flagship schools’ competition, which has been running for 17 years, will return in 2020 with a twist. Due to the current coronavirus situation in the UK, a new format for 2020 edition of TDI is being launched online.

The size and value of Ireland’s manufacturing sector has grown hugely over the last few decades and that growth continued at record levels last year. With over 4,000 firms operating in range of hi-tech sectors, from medical to aerospace, the market for manufacturing technology is huge. The biggest event in the country’s manufacturing calendar is the National Manufacturing & Supply Chain Conference & Exhibition a one-day event which attracts over 4,000 people to the Citywest venue outside Dublin.

Student’s embrace manufacturing technologies
The TDI Challenge final took place on Wednesday 4th July at, Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA) member company, Yamakazi Mazak’s European headquarters in Worcester. This year saw an increased number of entries from across the UK, with a select few invited to Mazak to contest the final. Hundreds of students from across the UK submitted either their GCSE, A-Level or BTEC Design and Technology Course Work Projects to be judged by a panel of experts drawn from Industry.

The true impact of manufacturing on the UK economy
Did you know that manufacturing in the UK accounts for nearly a quarter of the economy? And more than 7.4 million jobs depend on it, this is all according to new research commissioned by the Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA). For the first time ever, the study by world leading economics consultancy Oxford Economics has taken into account the full impact of the UK’s manufacturing economy, including the indirect effect of increasingly complex supply chains and the induced effect of the spending that manufacturers wages create in the economy.

Engineers Without Borders UK has support from MTA
The evening which celebrates the engineering industry took place on 8th February, the Manufacturing Technologies Association Annual Dinner, and while there was a big celebration of the UK advanced engineering sector, the event also had a charitable side. The dinner saw the announcement of the Presidents charity for the coming year. President Geoff Bryant, chose to support Engineers Without Borders UK for 2018.

MTA and AMRC's Factory 2050 forge Industry 4.0 feature at MACH
With next year’s MACH just around the corner and with Industry 4.0 and digitalisation being the centre of hot conversation topics, it’s not a surprise that the industry has seen a 3% growth since last year. Electronic Specifier’s Anna Flockett recently went to visit the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre’s (AMRC) Factory 2050, as it has partnered up with the MTA who together will be demonstrating a cost-effective adaptation of Industry 4.0 Technologies at MACH 2018.

MACH 2018 looks promising for industry
  Taking place at the NEC in Birmingham the preparation for next year’s MACH show is under way, with over 75% of exhibitor space already sold. MTA CEO James Selka described this as a very encouraging sign for the industry.
