The number of electric motors used within our everyday life is growing at an astounding rate, with industry analysts predicting this figure will continue rise. Chris Needes, Product Manager at Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Rencol, explains some of the innovative ways in which tolerance rings are currently being used.

“Training is one of those rare activities where everybody gains,” says Chris Roberts, Human Resources Manager at Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Rencol. “The trainees gain because they have better and more marketable skills, the company gains because we have a highly skilled workforce, our customers gain because that workforce can deliver even better products and services, and the industry as a whole gains because training makes more skilled people available.”

Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Rencol put the spotlight on health and safety as part of a company-wide International Environment, Health and Safety Day. The 120 employees at Rencol’s site in Bristol joined 212,000 colleagues from Saint-Gobain companies around the world to mark the day with a series of events designed to raise awareness of the need for the highest levels of health and safety both at work and at home.

The sophisticated systems that are being increasingly used to enhance the safety and comfort of modern vehicles make extensive use of sensors. The key to getting the best from these tiny but critical components is, however, all in the mounting, says Chris Needes, Automotive Product Manager at Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Rencol.

Tolerance rings are simple in concept, inexpensive, compact and easy to use yet when integrated in vehicle steering column assemblies, they can greatly enhance performance and safety while reducing overall costs. Chris Needes explains.

Saint-Gobain has acquired Rencol Tolerance Rings, a UK based subsidiary of ERIKS group NV, for a total of £12.5 million. The arrangement includes the company’s activities in Bristol and Japan, and the 51% controlling interest in Rencol MMI Technology pte in Singapore.

Joining Rencol Tolerance Rings for a year as part of its Work Placement Scheme are Bath University students Matthew Canning and Tanmay Dube. The students had to undergo an arduous selection procedure in order to win the place at Rencol and are the third year to take part in the recently expanded programme.

Rencol has appointed DAERYUK CORPORATION as its Korean agent. The appointment, which was made on July 1st supports the fact that tolerance rings are fast becoming an established technology in markets around the globe.
