NHS TRUST FOCUS ON STEAM ENERGY SAVINGS FOLLOWING TEI PRESENTATION
With steam generation accounting for 30 to 40% of most hospitals’ annual energy bills and with up to 45% of steam production being lost through less than efficient steam systems, it is unsurprising that Thermal Energy International’s (TEI) range of products for maintaining and minimising the cost of running steam and condensate applications is creating such interest with NHS Estate managers who are tasked with reducing carbon emissions and energy costs.
The surge of interest in TEI’s products follows the NHS Sustainable Development Conference – One Future, Different Paths, which saw 500 NHS senior Directors and Managers from Estates brought together to discuss the future of sustainability within the NHS. As part of the conference, Grant Bailey, Sales & Marketing Director of TEI Ltd, gave a presentation on how the reduction in carbon emissions targets being set at 15% between 2000 and 2010 could be immediately achieved with the installation of TEI technology, which can translate into a 16% saving in a hospital’s total energy consumption.

Held in February at Church House, Westminster, conference delegates were told by a number of eminent speakers, including Dr David Pencheon, Director of the Sustainable Development Unit for the NHS, that the NHS spends in excess of £400 million on energy each year and that this figure has to be substantially reduced. Between 2000 and 2020 NHS Estates Directors and Managers are targeted with reducing carbon emission by 34% rising to 80% by 2050.

TEI produces a range of water and heat recovery products, which include the award winning range of GEMÒ Venturi Orifice steam traps and the range of FLU-ACEÒ heat recovery system and boiler stack economizer. In recent hospital applications Muckamore Abbey Hospital in Belfast has achieved an 11.39% increase in boiler efficiency following the installation of FLU-ACEÒ gas economizer. This translates to a reduction of 151 tonnes of carbon per annum and £40,000 annual savings in energy. Similarly, the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital is achieving a 13% reduction in steam consumption and carbon emissions and is making annual saving of £53,000 following the installation of GEM steam traps.

Commenting Grant Bailey said: “As the headline sponsor for NHS Sustainable Development 2010 – One Future, Different Paths Conference and Exhibition we have been in a unique position to be able to advise NHS Estate Managers how they can cost effectively reduce their hospitals’ carbon emissions and energy costs. The ability of our products to help Estate Managers towards achieving Government targets has resulted in our receiving a large number of enquiries from hospitals”.
