Hager comments on the review of the IET Wiring Regulations

As part of the review of the IET Wiring Regulations, in terms of public comments, Paul Collins, Technical Support and Training Manager at Hager shared his thoughts.

“As the electrical industry enters a public consultation phase, which will finish on 23rd August 2017 as part of the review of the IET Wiring Regulations, Hager is committing to support its customers and partners through the process towards the final publication of the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations in July 2018.

“The review is designed to ensure harmonisation with current European standards, provide an opportunity to clarify existing regulations and allow new technology and methodology to be incorporated into the Wiring Regulations.

“Over the coming months, Hager will be working closely with all sections of the industry to both explain what the changes will entail, and offer advice around practical implementation and product selection.  Training courses, explanatory documentation, clarifying potential confusion and highlighting product solutions, will form part of the wide-ranging support infrastructure and knowledge hub the company is creating to ensure everyone is prepared for the publication of the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations in just over a year, which will then come into effect in January 2019.

“Initial understanding ahead of the Draft for Public Comment (DPC), indicates that areas under consideration include, updated guidance on Surge Protection and the inclusion of a new section covering energy efficiency considerations as part of the electrical design process.

“The current review, and the forthcoming publication of the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations, is an important period for the electrical industry.  It impacts not only product manufacturers, but consultants, designers and contractors alike.  As with our work around the Third Amendment to BS 7671 (17th Edition), Hager intends to fully support the sector and is investing substantial time and resources to deliver a highly qualified knowledge hub, allowing questions to be answered and potential mis-understandings to be clarified.

“The Hager expert panel heading up our commercial, residential and training specialist market offer, is in place to make sure our partners are fully up to speed with the new requirements when they are known and available, and our product solutions are what the market needs.”
