EPLAN’s Professional Data Portal, which provides electrical engineers with rapid access to data on thousands of components and devices, has recently been expanded to include new updating, enhancing and filtering functions for device data. The Data Portal isn’t a piece of software, but a comprehensive web based service, which is built into the EPLAN platform (Electric P8). It helps companies make significant time-savings in engineering design, while simultaneously enhancing documentation quality.

A further benefit to using the new Data Portal is that the following manufacturers have added their data to the system: PR Electronics, Panasonic, Vacon, Lovato, Schmersal, WayCon, Roxtec and more.

In addition, twenty five more product catalogues for existing manufacturers have been updated onto the Data Portal, providing engineers with the most up to date product details and the largest upload/update in the history of the Data Portal. Consequently, the comprehensive Portal now contains 114 manufacturers with over half of million devices between them. Customers include: Mitsubishi Electric, Siemens, Allen Bradley, Schneider, Omron and Weidmuller.

Thanks to the new features in the Data Portal users can start designing without having to go through the tedious process of setting up master data. When device data has been updated in the portal, the system warns users that more up-to-date data is available than that contained in their local database. The users can then update their local data at the push of a button, without manually searching and replacing.

The portal’s new data enhancement functionality begins at the start of a project, when device information is not yet available in the management system. Users can send lists of devices or model numbers to the Data Portal, which then creates a “shopping cart” for them to download, which contains all the devices found.

In addition to ensuring that commercial information is current, the new update feature also includes important engineering features such as macros, documentation and production reports.

Another practical benefit of EPLAN’s new Data Portal functionality is that when device data has been updated, the change is automatically recorded in the project documentation.

Comprehensive filtering options, such as the ability to save pre-filters, can be assigned to individual persons via the integrated rights administration system. Components can therefore be located more quickly, considerably increasing the speed and efficiency of the design process.

In addition, thanks to the revised feedback functionality, engineers can use the e-mail function to contact manufacturers directly from the portal if components are not correctly described or not currently available in the database.

From device manufacturers’ perspective, they benefit from direct access to around 75,000 EPLAN users, which enable the development of an additional virtual additional sales channel. In addition, the manufacturers receive direct answers to the following crucial questions: How many times has a component been downloaded? What countries are the products being used in? Which products are most popular and why?

EPLAN helps manufacturers integrate their own electronic product catalogues into EPLAN Data Portal. The services range from the migration of existing catalogues and product configurators to the development of new configurators. The result is a tailor-made electronic product catalogue that offers users custom engineering support.
